How to Fix Ipod Hardware Problems

Ok so iPods are probably some of the most popular MP3 players in known existence. Problem is, they're also really delicate, prone to scratches, and rarely do people buy the extended warranties(which is a bad idea to not get these buy the way). If you'
re anything like me, you got your iPod as a gift and forgot to get that extended warranty and beyond the point where that warranty is still purchasable(typically up to a year after purchase), you break it. Here's a short guide on how to fix some hardware problems.

Steps

1. Diagnose the issue. Take some time and figure out if the problem is the hard drive, LCD screen, logic board, or otherwise. Make sure you get the right part because typically iPod parts, even aftermarket models, are fairly expensive. You can always test to see what hardware is bad by grabbing one of your friends' iPods and playing trial-and-error with parts.

2. Open your iPod. This is easily done, thankfully. At least this is the case with video iPods and comperable models(laquer face and aluminum backplate). Take a small flathead screwdriver(like an eyeglasses style one) and insert it on either the left or right side into the groove where the black/white facepla
te meets the aluminum backplate(on other iPod models, where the aluminum meets the plastic). Then push the flathead in and down. This will release the clips(there are 3 on each side) that hold the backplate onto the faceplate.

3. Once inside, remove the backplate and place it perpendicular to and raised about 2 inches above the center line. This will release tension on the battery and headphone jack cables, which I might add, are extremely delicate.

4. Remove the troublesome part, retaining as much of the bad part as possible. Sometimes parts don't come with absolutely everything needed to remount. An example is the headphone jack which also includes the hold switch. That main white mounting unit isn't included with a replacement so you'll need to keep that.

5. Reseat the new part exactly as the old one had been (for ordering, check the link below) Make sure that all wire connections go back exactly as they had been.

6. Once the iPod parts are all together, replace the faceplate on the backplate exactly as it had been and squeeze it back together until it clicks.

Warnings

* Be very careful, the iPod is extremely delicate and so are the parts inside it.

* Make sure everything goes back together exactly like it was.
