Dream Killers & Your Goals!

I come in contact with so many different people and I am amazed by how many them have been told that they can?t do something or that their goals are unattainable. I am an active member of the infamous Myspace community. I noticed that although a great
number of my friends on myspace are in the music business a very large number of my friends include discouraged teenagers with dreams and goals that they have been told are ridiculous. I think it is of the utmost importance that we not allow anyone to discount our dreams or our goals.

Some people will tell you that your dreams and goals are unrealistic. Some people will tell you to be more practical. Most of these people will tell you these things under the guise of looking out for YOUR best interest when in actuality it comes from their own low expectations, limited vision, past failures and/or their own tendency to take the path of least resistance.

While they may think they mean well, they are really suggesting that you cannot achieve your goals and should therefore settle for less. Don?t do it!

For a person with ambitious dreams and goals being practical leads to an extremely disappointing and unfulfilling life. Never give up on your hopes a
nd dreams for the sake of being practical. If you want to be singer don?t go to college and major in education to appease the need to be practical. Major in music and if you must satisfy the practical monster, minor in something you have a passion for (or double major). You do yourself and the world a huge disservice when you abandon your dreams, your goals, your passion, or your 1st love.

While others may tell you that you can?t.... believe me when I tell you that you can! You can accomplish any goal you set for yourself, ?Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement.? (Brian Tracy)

Here are a few tips for setting and accomplishing your goals from my favorite book The Great Big Book of Wisdom by Brian Tracy:

  • Decide exactly what you want in every area of your life; you can?t hit a target you can?t see.

  • Start with a picture of your goal as already achieved in the future, and work back to the present. Imagine the steps that you would have taken to get from where you are now to where you want to be.

  • Write out your goals on 3X5 index cards; review them twice each day. Make a list of 10 things you want to achieve in the next year.

  • Create your own poster, covered with pictures of the things you want to acquire. All improvement in your life begins with an improvement in your mental pictures.

  • Go on a 30-day PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) diet; think and talk about accomplishing your goals.

  • Set high goals and standards for yourself; resist the temptation of the comfort zone. The tendency to follow the path of least resistance guarantees failure in life.

  • Decide in advance to use every adversity or setback as a spur to greater effort.

  • Setting deadlines for your goals activates your subconscious mind and reinforces your determination.

  • Continually bombard your mind with thoughts, words, pictures, and people consistent with the goals you want to achieve.

  • Put it in motion and start working towards achieving your goals.
