Farewell Ipod Monday

For the past two years, iPod Monday has been one of the main attractions of music lovers. Those Mondays were the times when those music lovers had their own night out and had the chance to share something about themselves and their choice of music thr
ough the songs stored in their iPods - and it does not matter if you owned an iPod Mini or an iPod Nano or whatever type of iPod or portable media player you may have.

But it does look like the end for iPod Monday has already come to an end. You see, the owner of the event and Apple, the manufacturer of the iPod, had a dispute with regards to the trademark. That is why the name of the event should be changed and the owner says that a new event would be spurting out starting February 19, which is, of course, a Monday.

The new event is now dubbed as “Bar Napkin Monday”. Clint Curtis is the brains and the name behind this new one and he also is the same person behind the now defund iPod Monday. The events have been held at the Lift where Curtis was the bartender and the host as well.

If you are an attendee of the iPod Monday and of the new Bar Napkin Monday, all you needed to do was bring along with you your favorite portable digital music
player. Make sure that your media player has got a playlist of your favorite songs which is going to run for 15 minutes. Curtis, as the host, would play each selection and while doing so, he would also be introducing the owner of the playlist to all other attendees so he/she could mingle, meet up, and make new friends with all other people at the bar.

iPod Monday used to have a website which was found at www.iPodMonday.com, but because of the dispute, it is not gone from cyberspace. In its place is the new site - www.clint-curtis.com. Accessing the new web site would give you an ordinary looking kind of inviation that really does get your attention. You see, Curtis wrote the invitation and message on a tissue paper. It says (errors and all): “Starting feb. 19, 2007. bar napkin mondays at the Lift 8:30 on. An informal weekly event at the Lift (in downtown Des Moines) write a poem, a short story (maybe even a drawing?), come in, order a drink & then share it with Clint the bartender and all those in attendance. Clint will post his fave from the night every Thurs at Clint-curtis.com. thank u & good day!”

The event has been quite a blow for Clint Curtis and his iPod Mondays. When he started out his Monday night events, he had gone through several attempts so that he would get permission to use the iPod trademark from Apple. It took a quite while for Apple responded. And because of the length of time, he thought that perhaps it was already okay so he went ahead with keeping the name for his musical night event. But Apple did respond and when they did, Apple told Curtis that he should drop the name. And he did.

Peter Alcorn did the liberty of telling Curtis about Apple’s decision in behalf of the company. Curtis learned about the decision when he was sent an email. Alcorn said that the title of Curtis’ event had violated the trademarks of Apple and in this sense, it cannot be used for the event, to the podcast as well as on the web site made specially for the event.

Furhtermore, Curtis was also informed by Alcorn, "With respect to the podcast and associated site, iPod Monday, Apple has determined that your product name, which incorporates the word 'iPod,' violates Apple's trademark guidelines ... Please choose a name for your product that is consistent with Apple's guidelines (that does not include iPod or any other Apple trademark or variation thereon)."

Too bad though for Curtis and his iPod Mondays. The last time that the musical night out has been held was last 12th of February and that also did mark the second year anniversary of the event.
