Boomsday by Christopher Buckley Book Review

How would you react if you worked very hard to get accepted into Yale and then discovered that your father squandered your tuition money on a dot.com business? You might react the same as Cassandra!

Cassandra's father suggested that she j
oin the military service and attend officers training program - "Give them a few years and they will pay for your college education." She was not impressed with her father's "bargain of the century" but really had no choice.

Ten years later, Cassandra is working in Washington. What really takes the cake is that her father has remarried and managed to get his stepson into Yale. How did he do this when the stepson did not have the "brains" to get into Yale in the first place?

In the evenings, Cassandra worked on her "blogging". Most of her blogging seemed to be picking on the Baby Boomer generation. Common sense would tell us that this was due to what her father had done with her tuition money. After all, what did the Baby Boomer generation ever do for the country? The generation of her grandparents was completely different. They accomplished several things. Boomers - they are only depending on the younger generation to pay for their social security benefits!

Well, Cassandra comes up with an idea and posts it on her blog. She suggested that the government offer incentives for Baby Boomers to kill themselves by age seventy-five! Many younger people start to really like this idea and Cassandra also gets the support of a senator who wants to capture the vote of the younger people for his presidential bid.

What happens to Cassandra and her new idea?

I absolutely loved this book. Christopher Buckley has written a satire that is very funny. The book is out just in time with so many Baby Boomers now retiring. It gives them all a good chance to laugh at themselves. Cassandra is a great character. The author does a good job of making the reader feel her emotions when she found out about her tuition money. If you haven't read any of Christopher Buckley's books, be sure to read this one. It is a very amusing read. Also, check out the neat jacket cover of this book. It is quite different.
