This is done by reflecting the beam in a mirror, moved by motors controlled by a computer that is repositioned between each pulse. This allows many points, placed within .001 inches of each other, to be created with precision and speed. A typical image or design requires approximately several hundred thousand points. For a large block, though, the number of points may be closer to a half a million. Each of these points is created and positioned with nearly perfect accuracy. A variety of lasers may be used in cutting crystals. Each type yields different results. If not, the refraction will blur the beam and redirect it so that it does not hit its intended target. This will compromise the integrity of the image that the artisan is attempting to create. This is what makes working with curved shapes or spheres so difficult. This is where to talent of the craftsman and the precision become so very crucial. The image within a sphere that measures 60 mm can only be created in about the central 20 mm of the sphere.
