Transferring Domain Names - 5 Reasons to switch Domain Name Registrars

There will come a time when you will want to transfer your domain name to another registrar. Think of a domain name registrar like you would any other business. They must offer your a fair price with a reasonable amount of services and provide it with
a smile. Below are five reasons to think about when considering a switch.

1) Your domain name is not registered by an ICANN accredited registrar. At this point, you shouldn't worry about transferring your domain name as much as figuring out if you even own your domain name. Chances are you may have been scammed.

2) Your domain name registrar doesn't offer a means to lock your domain name. Just like "real" property, domain names can be stolen. Make sure they can be locked.

3) You get gouged on the renewal price. Some domain registrars offer low prices for new domain name registrations then significantly up the price when it is time to renew. Price isn't always the best reason to leave, but if your renewal rate is more than $20 a year, then you should search for another domain name registrar.

4) Your domain name registrar offers limited services or offers a horrible user interface for managing your domains. This is reason enough to pa
y a little more at another registrar. Once you get more than a handful of domains, the interface available to manage those domains because critical. Some registrars make it virtually impossible to manage more than one domain name at a time.

5) The registrar has lousy customer service. Does it take forever for them to respond to support requests? Is there an 800 number? Does it get answered? Is there a support email address? How quickly do they reply? Our the answers satisfactory? Is there an online support chat client? How "friendly" was the rep typing on the other end? Did they answer your questions? Just like any other business you will find some registrars excel in this area and others are just awful. Unfortunately, a lot of times, the very same registrar can offer excellent customer service one day and lousy service the next.

So as you consider moving your domain name elsewhere, think about the above five points in light of your current registrar. You may decide that it is indeed time to make a change.
