The Little Giant and his Magic Ladder

The Little Giant and His Magic Ladder

One beautiful sunny morning, the Little Giant climbed up the ladder to the roof of his family castle, as he did every morning now, to observe his green, sprawling realm. He was a very young Giant, w
ho still had a lot more growing ahead of him. That?s why he had to use his magic ladder when he needed to see above his moderate height. All the Little Giants before him had relied on this ladder until they reached full height. Yet, it felt like he was never going to get tall enough! For now, the ladder grew as short or long as he asked, making it possible for him to remain self-sufficient, as he monitored the kingdom for any sign of trouble.

His family had ruled and protected the region populated by the Little People for centuries, until his father, the Great Giant, has fallen gravely ill, and wasn?t expected to recover. It was everyone?s hope that the Little Giant can ascend the throne and become the wise, revered ruler his father had once been, before the ravages of his illness have clouded his generous, quick mind.

The young prince was not so sure he was up to the task. Although his subjects had a lot of affection for him, the Little Giant felt their l
ack of confidence in his ability to rule. Their incessant teasing about his still-inadequate height saddened him, but he couldn?t argue: what kind of a Giant was he, if he couldn?t even climb onto his father?s imposing throne without the help of his ladder?! Little, that?s what kind!

Something strange caught his eye and interrupted his self-deprecating reverie.
A dark menacing shadow was slowly creeping over the brilliant green meadows and orchards he loved and knew so well. Heart in his throat, the Little Giant asked his ladder to raise him higher, as he tried to determine what was happening.

There it was ? the dreaded solar eclipse predicted to start soon and last for years. Rumor had it, the Sun had gone into mourning over the imminent loss of his dear old friend, the Great Giant. It was easy for his father, a full-fledged Giant, to converse with the Sun. He used to be in the habit of doing so every day, thus keeping the Sun in great spirits and his lands and people ? happy, healthy and prosperous. And now?

Sure enough, it was happening as the Little Giant watched, extending the ladder further, his heart gripped by the familiar debilitating fear. It had to happen on his watch, with Father dying and the Elders away at the annual strategic gathering, unaware of the grave danger about to destroy everything.

The pitch-dark shadows now enveloping his green lands promised imminent death. They threatened to swallow all that was alive under the Sun, now enshrouded in despair, oblivious to the grave danger its retreat posed to his land.
He then knew it was up to him to stop the imminent catastrophe, and this was no time to panic; but what could he do?! Suddenly, an idea began to form in his head. It was risky and guaranteed nothing, but it gave the Little Giant a glimmer of hope. He took a deep breath and gave the ladder a quiet, brisk order.

The magic ladder began to rise. The Little Giant closed his eyes and prayed for the help of his ancestors. He was starting to feel the unbearable heat, and, shielding his eyes, carefully peeked from under his tightly shut lids. It worked! He was looking into the tear-stained face of the Sun, half-hidden behind dark gauze curtains. The Sun was oblivious to his visitor, deeply absorbed in his grief. The youth cleared his throat, and spoke:

?Oh magnificent one, I have come to beg for your mercy. We all understand your loss, as my father was one of the most remarkable Giants to ever rule this land. Yet, to honor his memory, we must carry on in his honorable tradition. He would want us to be strong and make the well-being of this kingdom a priority. You must dry your tears, reveal your face and continue to bless all our loyal subjects with your healing light. This land is under a great threat, and without your help we are all doomed. The crops will perish, and the people are afraid. Please, o great Sun, be brave!? The Little Giant steadied himself on the ladder that was getting a bit wobbly. He knew he would have to let it rest soon. Did the Sun even hear his plea?

Just as he began to doubt the sanity of his desperate plan, the Sun began to speak: ?Forgive me, son, for in my moment of weakness I have forgotten my responsibilities. True, I am sad, but I must remember I am not the only one. You speak the truth; your father was a great leader and friend. But I didn?t realize what worthy successor he raised to rule in his stead. I thought all was lost, and this great land will perish with the passing of the Great Giant, but I was wrong: the new Great Giant has come to save us all. I must now serve you as well as I served him and all your ancestors. I will rise and light the way for the wise new ruler and his people!?

With that, the Sun threw open the curtains. From the height of his faithful ladder, the Little Giant saw the dark shadows slowly dissipating, and sparkling drops of morning dew lighting up the emerald fields. He saw crowds of Little People running from their houses toward the central square, their cries of wonder and joy growing louder. Just then, the magic ladder let out a tired little moan and began to collapse.

As the Little Giant flew toward the earth, all he could think was: ?The Sun referred to me as the Great Giant! Surely, he was mistaken: I am still little!? Then, he lost consciousness.

When the Little Giant awoke, he was sprawled on the warm grass and the wind was gently fanning his face. He was surrounded by many smiling little faces, and knew they somehow saved him, caught him before he hit the ground. Next to him, his heroic magic ladder was resting and preparing to serve him well again soon. He smiled timidly, and the crowd exploded with the loudest cheer he ever heard. Before the Little Giant knew what was happening, thousands of Little People were lifting his huge form, carrying him toward the castle, and mounting him on the throne. Others brought the beaming ladder and gently placed it next to him.

No one doubted his power any longer, and it slowly dawned on him that size may not be that important after all. He couldn?t have known that the legend of the littlest, yet bravest and wisest Giant to ever rule this great land with the help of his trusted magic ladder will be reverentially repeated for generations to come.
