Greenpeace Does It BestProtecting the environment is one major task that needs the cooperation of all people living on earth. This cannot be done overnight. It takes time to solve environment related problems and raise public awareness on the effects of environmental degradGreenpeace, an international non-profit organization, has been instrumental in solving major crises affecting the environment worldwide. According to its mission, ?Greenpeace exists because this fragile earth deserves a voice, it needs solutions, it needs change and it needs action.? And true to its mission, this global organization has always been there to advocate for environmental preservation through its ships since 1971. It makes its presence felt in 40 countries across Europe, North and South America, Asia and the Pacific. No other organization has been this dedicated and courageous in protecting the earth?s biodiversity and environment. In pursuing its mission, Greenpeace focuses on several aspects of the environment. One of these is the dangerous climate change blamed on increasing carbon dioxide emissions arou Another sector being targeted by this environmental group is the electronics industry. In its ?Cutting Edge Contamination? report, Greenpeace revealed that some of the largest and popular brands in the industry of electronics and their suppliers are to be blamed for contaminating rivers and underground wells with various chemicals during production. Developing countries like China, Mexico, Thailand and the Philippines are currently the manufacturing sites of most mobile phones, computers and other electronic products. While the focus at these production plants has been on labor practices, the environmental aspect has somehow been taken for granted. Research has shown that hazardous chemicals are released by production plants that manufacture printed wiring board, semiconductor chip and component assembly. Dr. Kevin Brigden from the Greenpeace Laboratories said these chemicals cause contamination during disposal or electronic waste recycling. Groundwater wells, notably those near semiconductor manufacturers, have been found to be affected by contamination by toxic chlorinated chemicals (VOC?s) and toxic metals. This can pose a great risk on the health of people living in nearby communities who use groundwater for drinking water. Greenpeace is now calling all major manufacturers of electronics to take action in ensure a clean production process. It cannot be denied that electronics manufacturing is booming these days as a result of technological advancement but the major companies behind this sector should do their part in ensuring that they provide clean technologies, substitute hazardous chemicals, protect the health of their workers and prevent environmental pollution. Preserving the environment is not just the work of one group as every one has a role to play ? individuals and companies alike. It?s never too late to do what we have to do. Let?s just not wait for tomorrow so let?s act now.
