Retail Design: Keep it Simple

The retail store design qualities of today have taken a turn toward simplicity. As our world has become a more complicated place with an unimaginable number of products to choose from, consumers are seeking something simple. The average person now t
akes their food on the go, orders more and more products online, and is bombarded by advertisements in every part of their daily life. Successful retail displays allow the customer to browse enjoyably without an unnecessary amount of products or choices.
The "distraction" advertising technique was once the most common and effective form of advertisement, however, it is now a thing of the past. Today's consumers have become desensitized to the constant flow of advertising they receive, and retailers are finding much more success with simple display systems that do not attempt to cause an overload of commercialism. The more clean and uncomplicated, the better a display will impact the consumer.
Better site lines, wider isles, and more white space should be the retail design slogan for the future of retail sales. Consumers are finding themselves overwhelmed by information and busy schedules, and they desire shopping to be a break from that busy world of life. Shop
ping has always been a favorite pastime of the American people, and it only makes sense that people desiring to simplify their lives would also want their shopping experience to be simpler and more enjoyable. Trying to make more space may seem daunting to the average retailer, but there is always a way. Cutting back on inventory may be a major method of freeing up some of your retail space. What is lost from those fringe products, will be vastly make up with featured product sales due to the desirability of your store environment. The more satisfying a retail design environment seems, the more likely a customer is to stay in that environment. A comparison of Walmart and Target is a great example of this concept. The goal of Walmart retail design is to show a huge inventory at low prices, while Target retail display is much more simple with special care taken to keep the store color coordinated and balanced. Target's inventory is much less, but this allows for a much less complicated sales floor. Competing with Walmart's low prices can be nearly impossible, but creating an enjoyable shopping environment will attract those customers seeking to shop for pleasure as well as necessity. This type of consumer is multiplying rapidly as people are beginning to realize that low prices are not worth the stress.
The choice to simplify a store display design can be difficult, but forcing simplicity will only create a more pleasant environment for customers to enjoy. If customers are enjoying themselves, then they are likely to come again and spend time really considering every product on the shelf.
