Switching your network service provider without changing your mobile phone number

It has been often that you are not satisfied with your mobile phone service provider. These days there are various mobile phone networks like Orange, 3 Mobile, T Mobile, O2, Vodafone, Virgin,
etc offering competitive mobile phone deals, lots of benefits like free line rental, half line rental and free handsets. So, one of the reasons to change your service provider can be the high costs of your service provider than the other or the other network provider is offering a better deal than the existing one. Other reasons may be like you are not getting enough coverage and facing poor reception resulting in too many dropped calls.

Some consumers are hesitant to change their mobile phone provider even if they see a better mobile phone deal simply because they don't want to change their existing mobile phone number. But these days, you don't have to lose your old mobile number. Depending on your carrier, you may be charged a small fee involved for the transfer of service.

Most carriers can now implement Local Number Portability (LNP), which is a service that lets you transfer a phone number to another carrier. So you can take advantage of this feature to switch
wireless carriers and keep the same number, or even to transfer your landline phone to a mobile phone. But you can't transfer a pager number, toll free number, or some other types of special use numbers.

Generally, when you transfer your mobile phone number from an old service to a new service, your old service will be disconnected automatically. If you are having a contract mobile phone and your contract has not yet expired, you may still have to pay fees to the old service. But if you're transferring between prepaid services or pay as you go mobile phones, then no long term contracts apply.

You need to contact your new provider first as they are the ones who will take care of the transfer. Don't cancel your old service before the porting process begins as you may lose the ability to transfer the number. Be aware that you may have to buy another mobile phone if your mobile phone is not compatible with the network you are switching to.
