In this article, I am going to walk you through step-by-step how to find out what is hot in the Entertainment Industry and turn that information into a list of ideas for products that you can sell on eBay. Early on in my eBay product sourcing education, I learned that America loves entertainment images on things that they use in day to day living! Whether it is Scooby Doo Wall Stickers or Hello Kitty Car Mats, America has a love affair with their beloved movie and TV c People have a fondness and attachment in their heart for the TV and movie characters they grew up with. They also have money in their pocket to surround themselves with memorabilia from their favorite shows. Taking that one step further, today?s parents love the fact that their children are enjoying many of the same shows or remakes of shows that they enjoyed as kids. When I realized that most anything that is popular in the Entertainment Industry will have products associated with it that sell successfully on eBay, I tuned my ?eBay filter? ( this is the filter that I ?install? in my mind every day that evaluates each product or idea I come across during the day as a potential product to sell on eBay) to keeping track of what is hot in the entertainment industry and ferreting out what related products are selling on eBay. Let?s get back to the Star Wars Trilogy for a moment. Back in January I was at a Trade show and came across a Vendor who had a bunch of Lego Pens tucked away in a corner. They had been a rep for this item, but were closing them out. I knew that they would fetch a decent price on eBay, but more importantly, I also knew that the Star Wars Trilogy was being released this September on DVD. With that in mind, I bought their remaining stock and held on to it until the new DVD set was released. I bundled the set of pens together and they are selling like hotcakes. Why did I wait until September to sell them? Because even though Star Wars is an ever popular movie, I knew that the release of the Trilogy DVD would ignite even more interest in Star Wars memorabilia and this would drive prices up. So how do you find out what is hot in the Entertainment industry and even better, what is going to be hot in the upcoming months? First we will look at the ?off-line? method and then we will look at the even more powerful ?on-line? method. Off-line Research One way to find out what is currently trendy is to keep your finger on the pulse of the entertainment industry. Reading the paper, reading the entertainment magazines and watching the entertainment shows on TV will start to help you become an expert in your ?field?. It is here you will find all the information you need on what movies, TV shows, entertainers are sizzling hot and which ones are only lukewarm. You can also find all this information online by doing some simple Google searches. Once you find out who and what is hot ? go to eBay and start searching for related products. As you start finding products that are top sellers, you can now go about finding a source for those types of products. Also don?t discount the vintage and collectible market. I just read an article in the paper the other day about the 30th anniversary of Hello Kitty. The article talked about the amazing popularity of Hello Kitty and how that market has now spread to teenagers and adults. I already sell some Hello Kitty items, but now I am on the search for more Hello Kitty merchandise both wholesale and vintage. Hello Kitty products from 30 years ago are in demand. I also know because of that article, that my target market is not just elementary school girls. That there are teenage girls and their moms looking for Hello Kitty products. What Do I Sell.com TIP:Every time I go to a Gift or Trade show, I pick up every brochure/catalog that I am even remotely interested in. When I was at a trade show this summer, I happened to pick up a Hello Kitty catalog from a vendor. At the time I wasn?t thinking about expanding my Hello Kitty Product line, but grabbed the catalog anyway. After reading this recent article, I am now very interested in expanding my product line. And now I have a supplier lead to start with because I grabbed the catalog a couple months back. This underscores the reason why it is important to get on Vendor mailing lists for a host of product catalogs or get on their email notification list. You never know when a supplier list you are already on will have exactly the product you are looking for. On-line Research Another way to find out what is popular in the Entertainment Industry is by doing a daily or weekly watch on the Lycos Top 50 at: 50.lycos.com /> A quick look at what?s hot in Entertainment on the Lycos Top 50 list tells me that Pokemon, Hillary Duff, Dragon Anime, Paris Hilton, Baseball, Golf ? Ryder Cup and College Football are what?s happening in Entertainment. Just to name a few! This list will give you many ideas of product niches to get into. These products are hot right now and the trends may or may not last long enough to give you time to track down related product suppliers. In most cases, the peak of an Entertainment trend will last at least 6 months or longer (much much longer in the case of Star Wars). Unless the movie, show or CD release is a dud?.. So what if you could figure out what was going to be hot in Entertainment ahead of the crowd? What if you could tap into what will be generating the buzz 3 months from now? If you knew ahead of time what movies will be popular you would have the time to focus on finding suppliers for related items, building up your inventory and gaining a foothold in the market. And not only can you sell products related to the movies, but those related to the actors in the movies themselves. Anytime there is a movie with a mega-star in it ? take The Rock (the actor) for example, you will find products related to that actor on eBay. Another place to find out about upcoming movie releases is in the Earth?s Biggest Movie Data Base at: us.imdb.com /> find the top DVD sellers here As you go through these lists, take your product sourcing notebook (this is the little notebook that you carry with you every day to make notes of potential products to sell on eBay) and make notes of what the upcoming releases are that interest you. Next, go to eBay and search for those movie titles or characters and see what is selling now. Is there anything that is already showing a positive sales trend? Even if you do not spot any trends currently, you will want to keep checking the keywords as the weeks go by. After doing your eBay search to get an idea of what is selling there, we are now going to take a look at what people are searching for on the Internet using the keywords for the movie or character you are interested in selling products for. There are 2 tools that we are going to use to find this information. The first is Overture?s Keyword Search Suggestion Tool at: (Overture?s Search Engine which gives you a list of the number of searches performed for the keyword with a list of associated searches.) inventory.overture.com /> In the dialog box, enter your search terms. For example, if I enter the term ?Scooby Doo?, the search returns a full page of associated products and topics for Scooby Doo. It is sorted by the number of searches for each related term for the preceding month. You now have in front of you a huge list of product ideas for your related term and you know how many people are already searching for these products on Overture. For example, I now know that people are searching Overture looking for: Scooby Doo games (13,459 searches) Scooby Doo backpacks (4,079) Scooby Doo Wall paper (1856) Scooby Doo bedding (1422) If people are searching on Overture and Google for these items it is almost guaranteed they are searching on eBay for these products. Next go to Google Adwords Keyword Tool at: adwords.google.com /> and enter your keyword search term. If I enter ?Scooby Doo? here, I get an even longer list of associated products and topics to the term Scooby Doo. So what do you *do* with this information? After you have your list of products you can start to track down suppliers for them. If you have been building a supplier file of catalogs and are on a variety of email notification lists from Vendors, you may already have a supplier right at your finger tips for some of the products. If not, the fact that you are able to predict months ahead what might be a hot trend will give you several months to do your research and locate a supplier for the line of products that you are interested in selling. So tap into what is hot in the entertainment world, find out what people are searching for currently on the web and develop a huge list of potential product ideas. The entertainment industry is an evergreen ever changing niche.
