Big Bet Before the Break

Well friends, the NBA is on the verge of its All-Star break to be held over the weekend in Las Vegas (what a terrific venue), so tonight was the last chance to get some action on an NBA game for the next few days. There was a real marquee match up tha
t I knew I would be watching so I decided to get some action on it. Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers traveled to LA to take on Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. Two of the NBA's top stars, head to head on national television for the 2nd time in 5 days. The last time these two teams met, the Cavs were victorious. Did the Lakers have what it takes to avenge that defeat? Well, the odds makers seemed to think so as the Lakers were a whopping 7 point favorite. I thought that line was way too high when you consider the Lakers are reeling, losers of 3 straight and 10 of their last 14 overall. The Cavs on the other hand have been playing well and as I mentioned, beat the Lakers just 5 days ago. I flirted with taking the Cavs money line but decided to just take the 7 points. Any chance I get to root against Kobe Bryant, that's always a good thing.

To recap, my pick was the Cavs -7.

LeBron James was electric from the opening tip and scored a game high 38 points and
the Cleveland Cavaliers beat Los Angeles 114-108 Thursday night to extend the Lakers' losing streak to five games, matching the longest of coach Phil Jackson's career. The win was the fourth in five games for the Cavaliers, who enter the All-Star break with the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

Anderson Varejao added 15 points and 11 rebounds, Larry Hughes scored 14, and Eric Snow had 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Cavaliers, who had seven player in double figures. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 34 points, six rebounds and five assists. Lamar Odom had 20 points and eight rebounds and Sasha Vujacic scored 14 for Los Angeles.

There were 61 personal fouls and four technicals called in this incredibly slow-moving game. The game was close throughout and I was glad I had 7 points in my pocket. The longer the game stayed competitive I knew my chances of winning would be improved.

Bryant scored five points during a 14-5 run to start the second half, giving the Lakers a 68-61 lead. But with James scoring six points, the Cavaliers responded with a 15-2 spurt, putting them ahead 76-70 and drawing groans from the partisan crowd at the Staples Center.

Cleveland led 91-85 entering the fourth quarter. The Lakers outscored the Cavaliers 9-2 to start the fourth quarter for a 94-93 lead. Neither team led by more than four points after that until Varejao's late foul shots. A three-point play by Varejao triggered a 15-3 run that put the Cavaliers on top 50-42, and that turned out to be the biggest lead of the game for either team. Vujacic's 3-pointer as the first half ended trimmed Cleveland's lead to 56-54.

A 3-pointer by Bryant with 34.3 seconds left moved the Lakers within one. James made a foul shot with 20 seconds left before missing the second, but Varejao got the rebound, the Lakers finally fouled James again with 11.7 seconds to play, and he made two free throws. Bryant missed another 3-pointer with eight seconds left, and Varejao made two free throws to complete the scoring.
LeBron wins, Kobe loses, and most importantly, I win. Time for Vegas, baby.

Till next time, may all your bets be winners.
