Golf Tips - Stop Slicing - How a Bad Lie Can Reduce Your Slice

The slice is the nemesis for most golfers. This is the one ailment that afflicts almost all golfer at some point. Problem is only a small percentage of golfer have learned how to reduce or eliminate their slice.

The slice is created when
the golf ball is struck with a club face that is in an open position in relation to the path the club is travelling. So if you are a right handed golfer the club face will point to the right of the path the club travels. The other swing element most golfer s get wrong is the path. Nine times out of ten a slice has an out-side-to-inside swing path. This means the club is travelling outside of the intended target line while approaching impact and inside the target line after impact.

Today, you will learn a way to improve the path of you golf swing and square the club face angle all in one exercise. As stated in the last paragraph about 90 percent of golfers swing the club on the incorrect path. This exercise will improve that path. It will get you to swing the club so it approaches the ball from the inside of the target line. Let's get to the exercise.

Ever hit a ball in the rough, then you get to the ball and find that the ball is on a side hill lie. The ball
lies higher than your feet. Now you hit the ball and find that it flies a little straighter than normal. Why does this happen? First the lie angle changes and affects how the club is swung. The club will be taken away more to the inside compared to a perfect lie. This helps flatten your backswing naturally. The flatter swing has two benefits.

Benefit Number 1

With the ball lying above your feet it becomes difficult to make contact with the ball with an outside-to-inside swing path. Because the ground is higher it increases the chance of hitting behind the ball. This lie forces you to swing flatter which allows you to swing the club on the proper path easier. The club needs to approach the ball from an inside path to increase the chance of solid contact.

Benefit Number 2

The flatter swing encourages you to rotate your forearms properly through impact. The rotation of your forearms helps you to square and even to close the club face at impact. Remember that an open club face is the slice's number one suspect. Getting the club face to square up at impact will allow you to create more powerful and accurate golf shots.

On the practice range, or if your course is not busy, find a spot where you can hit shot offs a side hill lie so the ball is above your feet. Be sure to grip down on the club a bit. At first aim and align as you normally would. Get a feel of your swing getting a little flatter and how your forearms rotate to square the club face. Once you see the ball go either straight or begin to draw hit some shots from a flat lie and try to reproduce the ball flight pattern.

As you begin to improve the one thing you will need to remember a ball that lies above your feet will change the lie angle of the club. This means that even with a square club face the change in lie angle plus the effect of loft will cause the club face act as if it is closed. The higher the loft the higher the closing affect. So a right handed golfer will have to aim more to the right with a wedge compared to a three iron.

This golf drill give you the golfer an excellent opportunity to get the feel of the proper swing path and the proper rotation of the forearms to square the club face. Soon you will be able to reduce and eliminate your slice. You will gain not only accuracy but also distance from one golf exercise.
