First, you need to find out where you stand. Find out what your credit report says about. Every time you apply for credit, your credit report will be reviewed. Lenders check your report to determine your reputation for credit worthiness.

A credit report contains information such as your name; current address; previous address; social security number; date of birth; place of employment; and detailed list of your charge accounts, credit accounts, your monthly payment schedule and your payment history, and public record items. Also inquiries are recorded in your credit report.

You may obtain a copy of your credit report for a fee. However, if you have been turned down for credit within the past 60 days, you are entitled to a free copy from the credit bureau that reported the negative information. Also, you are entitled to one free credit report per year.

When you recieve your report, review it to spot any incorrect information or see if there are any ommissions. You have the right to dispute any inaccurate or incomplete information that is contained in your report. So examine your report carefully. If something is wrong, you need to contact the credit bureau and let them know about it. They must investigate it and provide you with written results of the investigation, as well as free copy of your updated credit report.

Submit your dispute in writing, along with any supporting documentaion. Always keep copies of all documents submitted. You should keep record of every interaction between you and the credit bureau. Send your letters to the credit bureau via certified mail, return receipt requested.

If the investigation reveals an error, then the credit bureau must correct it.

If the credit bureau completes its investigation and decides that the negative notation should remain in your report, you can file a one hundred word explanation to refute the claim.

Once you have cleaned up your report, it's time to start adding positive credit information. You can rebuild your credit by using a secured credit card. To obtain a secured credit card, you are required to deposit money into a savings account to serve as collateral. Always make your payments on time.

Another great way to rebuild credit is to take out a small secured loan and pay it back promptly. Prompt payments on loans create a strong credit record.
